Bioregional Self-Governing
A cluster of key distinguishing aspects of bioregioning includes agency, autonomy, self-determination, and self-empowerment – all of which fall under the umbrella of bioregional self-governance. This focus intersects with our other 2 primary focal points – with Convenings, in that the Bioregional Congressing traditionally integrated a strong thread of self-governance, as the gatherings integrated specific deliberative processes pursued by delegates and delegative bodies; and with Knowledge Commons, in that modalities of self-governance warrant documentation as a basis for disseminating knowledge on self-governance frameworks and processes to support practice within and across bioregions.
Bioregional Coherence Circle
In 2025, r3.0 invited key organizations in the bioregional movement into a Conference Coherence Circle to provide ad hoc support to our 2025 Conference Programming. After the Conference, we realized that this group of organizations could continue to provide support to the broader bioregional movement, so we convened the full group to ask if they wanted to fulfill this role – and got a resounding YES!
So, we continue to steward what we now call the Bioregional Coherence Circle. The first act of the Circle was to curate a Global Bioregional Month in September 2026, anchored by the r3.0 Conference, Turtle Island Bioregional Congress, and Design School Mediterranean Bioregional Gathering.

Co-Governance
The Dawnlands Bioregioning Collective, which r3.0 Senior Director participates in, is pursuing a “co-leadership” model of governance (or co-governance) that integrates Indigenous governance practices in tandem with non-Indigenous governance practices.
Sociocracy
r3.0 has significant experience in practicing Sociocracy, in particular through its strong relationship with r3.0 Advocation Partner Sociocracy for All, enabling r3.0 to integrate Sociocratic practices into its own bioregioning work, as well as training others on integrating Sociocracy into bioregioning.
