Bioregional Knowledge Commoning (BKC) Database Release

We are very excited to announce that r3.0 Research Fellow Andrea Farias, an autonomous researcher and member of the ReFi Barcelona workers cooperative, has launched Bioregioning.Earth, releasing her bioregional knowledge commoning database that documents organizations, practices, and ideas at the frontier of bioregional work. It maps how communities, institutions, and networks around the world are learning to live and govern within the logic of place — watersheds, landscapes, and living systems rather than administrative borders …

Bioregional Open Dialogue 14: Mapping the Field – Launching a Bioregional Knowledge Commons Database

How do we relearn to live in right relationship with the land and water that sustain us? Communities around the world are already answering it in practice, through regenerative food systems, watershed stewardship, and new forms of place-based governance. But this knowledge often stays scattered: locked in reports, oral histories, and disconnected systems, largely invisible to the wider field trying to learn from it.

Seeds Series Volume 2

It’s appropriate that SeedsVolume 2 — after germinating underground for a year — now sprouts in early Spring (here in the Northern hemisphere)! Entitled Unmaking & Remaking at the Edge of Dissolution: A Meta-Conversation on Re-Patterning for Just Transitions to Regenerative Economics & Cultures, the document synthesizes perspectives from ~20 Interviewees supported by a ~30-member Working Group.

In 11 subchapters — 8 Aligned Findings and 3 Idiosyncratic Analyses — we interwove Interviewee quotations to create what we call a meta-conversation: although the Interviewees did not speak to each other directly (as we conducted separate interviews), the perspectives they shared very much spoke to each other in a conversation that we braided together. BIOREGIONING

Building on our history of bioregioning, r3.0 is now fully dedicating itself to place-based engagement, at the fractal nested scales of the bioregion and the municipality

Our Bioregioning work, supported by a grant from the NoVo Foundation, focuses on 3 elements are: Bioregional Convenings, Bioregional Knowledge Commons and Self-Governance.

Our Municipal work, supported by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SHHRC) of Canada, focuses on research and implementation of Context-Based Sustainability by municipalities. We pursue this work in collaboration with our Advocation Partner Randy Sa’d of the Flourishing Enterprise Institute and our Research Advisor Daniela Senkl of the University of Guelph.

BLUEPRINTING

In it’s first decade of work (2013 -2023) r3.0 concentrated on a first set of Knowledge Commons, presenting a systemic approach to collapse avoidance, based on the backcasting of an ideal of a regenerative economy design. Reality has shown that humanity has missed the opportunity to jointly react to the necessities. While the Blueprints were written in the hope to at least smoothen collapse, they remain useful instruments and contain many gems for creating collapse awareness as well as tools that continue to have value in bioregioning.

Our Blueprints represent the core of r3.0’s knowledge creation process from 2013 to 2022, with the goal of identifying the gap between current practice / ambition and necessary progress (based on scientific realities and ethical imperatives) with recommendations on how to fill those gaps. The first phase of Blueprint development (2015-2018) focused on four fields (Reporting, Accounting, Data, and New Business Models) with a fifth Blueprint synthesizing and integrating the other four into an implementation framework (Transformation Journey). The second phase of Blueprint development (2019-2022) focused on Sustainable Finance and Value Cycles, Educational Transformation and Funding Governance for Systemic Transformation, bring the total number of Blueprints up to nine.

As of 2024 r3.0 repositioned itself to serve ‚collapse resilience‘ strategies in Bioregioning.

7 Transformative Learning Perspectives for Regeneration and Thrivability

The dissemination and subsequent implementation of the content from r3.0’s Knowledge Commons takes place in different programs and solutions. This includes a variety of designs. More generally, r3.0 has created an Advocation Partner Program and an Academic Alliance for interested parties and individuals to have a regular update on r3.0’s work and hear first hand about the opportunities to collaborate with r3.0, but also amongst themselves. More than 150 organizations globally are part of these exchanges that also come with benefits, e.g. a 50% discount on r3.0’s trainings and conferences. At this moment r3.0 offers the Transformation Journey Program and the UNSDPI Training to lead transformation and context-based sustainability measurement. Other programs and solutions can emerge due to specific campaigning, such as the Transcending Incrementalism campaign, the Global Thresholds & Allocations Commons, and the Sustainability Context Group. Finally, r3.0 has a so-called Test Lab Program, allowing the development and testing of new ideas and solutions, some of those may spin off at a later moment.

Transformation Journey Program

A modularized implementation journey for all constituencies, all sizes and all parts of the world, helping to start transforming organizations step-by-step, and aiming at organizational thriveability and system value creation. It addresses individuals and organizations on nano, micro, meso and macro level. The Journey Program allows flexible application with partners. Joint learning is possible in webinars and generic workshops. Individual implementation can be achieved with r3.0 Advocation Partners.

UN Sustainable Development Performance Indicators

On 1 November 2022, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) released the Sustainable Development Performance Indicators (SDPIs) in what Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Co-Founder Allen White called a “Brundtland Moment”. The SDPIs, released in a Manual entitled Authentic Sustainability Assessment, received significant attention (BSR: “a major inflection point”; THRIVE Institute: “sustainability history in the making”), especially in light of the releases of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) Standards and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), which are either legally binding for organizations in different jurisdictions or required by investors.

Advocation Partner

The opportunity for subject matter experts in consultancies and advisory organizations to support the dissemination and testing of the Blueprint recommendations. Advocation Partners work with their clients in helping them integrate the Blueprint recommendations and tools, scaling implementation worldwide.

Academic Alliance

Fostering the exchange between academics and practitioners in order to accelerate the application of gained knowledge. The four main areas of collaboration are supporting Blueprint development, joint research projects, program alignment and curriculum development.

Sustainability Context Group (SCG)

A global network of leaders from business, investment, civil society, government, academia, etc… who advocate for more robust application of the Sustainability Context Principle, which calls for respecting ecological, social, and economic thresholds & allocations. The Susty Context Group now acts under the r3.0 umbrella.

Transcending Incrementalism

In 2022, celebrating the 10th year of r3.0’s existence, we are embarking on a five-legged campaign to help overcome ESG-based incrementalism and achieve more awareness and clarity for the implementation needs and methods to arrive at System Value Creation. This r3.0 campaign will also become a core feature of r3.0’s forthcoming 10th anniversary conference on September 6/7, 2022.

Global Thresholds & Allocations Commons

r3.0 proposes the formation of a multi-stakeholder Global Thresholds & Allocations Commons (GTAC), to establish an authoritative approach to reporting economic, environmental and social performance in relation to generally accepted boundaries and limits. GTAC will identify thresholds and norms, design and validate allocation methodologies and disseminate the agreed upon solutions.

Research & Test Labs

r3.0 is constantly challenging its thinking based on feedback we receive through the above mentioned programs. New ideas arise and those will be tested as pilot projects, and experience will be gathered. If vetted positively, outcomes of the Test Lab will lead to inclusion in future Blueprints and Solutions. This site will host r3.0 research projects with partners and – when developed – own research areas, carried out with Advocation Partners, Academic Alliance Partners and other collaboration partners.

White Papers

White Papers derive from r3.0’s collaboration wit other partners in the r3.0 community and tackle specific issues. They are particularly valuable as necessary clarifications in the strive from degeneration to regeneration & thriving, and they serve as prompters for necessary changes in the set of r3.0 Blueprints, whenever a new round of updates is planned. The first Whitepaper ‚From Monocapitalism to Multicapitalism‘, written by r3.0 Senior Director Bill Baue in collaboration with the IIRC, will support adaptation of various Blueprints in r3.0’s first review round starting 2022.

Opinion Papers

Opinion Papers are structuring certain viewpoints into a condensed and concise design. These viewpoints can come from r3.0 staff and were communicated elsewhere before, or can generally come from anybody in the r3.0 community that wants to use this format for making a contribution to the field of transformations towards regeneration and thriving. We invite our community to come forward if they are interested to work with us on an Opinion Paper. The first Opinion Paper by r3.0 Managing Director Ralph Thurm presents his successful Linkedin series ’The Big Sustainability Illusion’, and pulls all four parts together in one r3.0 design format.

Case Studies

Case Studies will add a third and last component of +Maverick Thinking, namely direct application of r3.0’s knowledge for practical use. This will strengthen the use of r3.0’s backcasting approach and how transformation can be tackled in necessary ways. r3.0 invites its partners to come forward with case study ideas. A first case study will be released in the next couple of months, using the SBTi formal complaint that r3.0 Senior Director Bill Baue currently leads as a first case.

To achieve a regenerative & distributive economy, r3.0 regularly addresses shortcomings and systemic failures of certain players in influential positions of the current economic system design. We document our approaches towards interaction with these players in this part of our website. They form input for all those that want to delve deeper into research or develop action against these shortcomings or failures. These resources should also make clear that all approaches r3.0 has chosen are based on research grounded in scientific evidence, ethical norms, and sound reasoning. We see these resources as a common good, freely available for everyone.
